Many people visit Shoal Bay East at Uncle Ernies and never get more than 100 yards from there. . . .

Upper Shoal Bay

But the sand of Shoal Bay beach goes east around a point, and then you are in Upper Shoal Bay. Same beach, but a different ambience. Quieter. Emptier.

Upper Shoal Bay is not completely deserted: you can eat and drink at Gwen's Reggae Grill or Serenity Bar and Restaurant (see picture below of new beach snack bar that proprieter Ken Rogers has recently added; he is also building a small inn on his property).

Our home, Bellamare Villa, is the property at the end of the beach, to the left of Serenity. It has access to the beach and is available for rental. See www.bellamare.ai

The Shoal Bay Scuba Shop is right next to Gwen's on the property of the Allamanda Beach Club (the grove of palm trees along the beach was planted by Sam Mason, owner of Allamanda, when he first started his resort several years ago).

If you step into the water at the far end of Upper Shoal Bay, where the sand meets the shoreline, and then snorkel back toward Allamanda and the dive shop, you can usually see hundreds of tropical fish feeding in the limestone ridge that runs along the shore there. The water is only about 3 feet deep so you can stand up. The ridge is not a coral reef, so you don't need to worry about cutting yourself on it. The only danger is the occassional sea urchin down in a crevice, so put your feet down on sand when you stand up. This area is perfect for novice snorkellers.

The pictures here were taken on November 1, 2002. Weather: 84 F, sunny blue skys, puffy white clouds, light breeze. On the same day, weather in New York City was 48 F, partly cloudy, Chicago was 41 F with sun, and Denver was 21 F with Fog.

Shoal Bay Penthouse

[Click for web site] Mary Ann Green, inspiration and architectural mastermind behind the Beach Shack project has decided to open up the Penthouse suite for rental for a limited period.

Mary Ann is passiontate about the design of living spaces: "I like to create places that feel good to live in and to use, not beautiful rooms that people are afraid to touch. To attain this friendly, comfortable, happy feeling means small things like having an ottoman with the sofa to stretch your legs out on (instead of a delicate glass coffee table), practical fabrics that feel good on your skin, the warmth of natural wood ceilings, natural stone, terra cotta or coral stone, warm tropical colors like lavender, yellow, and turquoise, and an abundance of bright flowers and tropical palms inside and out."

"We just recently moved out of the penthouse after living there for two years. I was so comfortable I didn't want to leave. Now that the space is available, I thought it would be a good idea to open it to guests. It's a spot that I treasure and it's a great opportunity to decorate it as I've always wanted to."

One bedroom, unique design and construction, direct access to Shoal Bay beach. Click the link below for more details.

Note: this apartment is no longer for rent indepedently, but the entire property is:

Guided Tour of Historic Sandy Ground

The village of Sandy Ground has a long history. It was once even an Amerindian ceremonial site and home. And over the centuries it has always been a center of activity. Visitors this season have a chance to soak up this history in a walking tour of Sandy Ground, given by Sir Emile Gumbs, the former Chief Minister of Anguilla, or his son Laurie. Tours are by appointment at 10am on Tuesdays. To book an appointment, ask your hotel or call the Tourist Board at Tel. 264.497.2759.

The tour includes the old salt factory and pump house. You will learn the salt pond, about harvesting salt, and the state of the pond today. Inside the pump house (which is now a popular bar and restaurant), the original electric pump still survies and there is a collection of photos of the salt harvest, its workers and old Sandy Ground.
