Anguilla News

Sile Bay is another one of Anguilla's apparently endless supply of remote and wonderful beaches. . . .

Hidden Anguilla: Sile Bay

Sile Bay has two parts: the closer is a crescent of rock and the further is a longer crescent of sand. Located on the south shore of Anguilla, in the East End, between Mimi Bay and Savannah Bay, it has no shade, no services, no crowds--a Robinson Crusue beach!

The two pictures above were sent to me recently by Mala Wigley; I took the pictures below in 1998 (click any of the pictures to see a larger view). Mala also mentions that Sile bay is one of the best locations for seeing Whales as they pass by close to shore in February and March; this is their normal route. Mala should know, as she has a villa at Sile Bay called Whale View which is for sale.

Frank & Dave from Savannah Gallery have a one bedroom Villa with pool overlooking Sile Bay and neighboring Savannah Bay called Windsong Villa. It looks like a great place to stay for a tranquil vacation. This is an unspoiled and undevelaoped area of Anguilla with great views to the south toward St Martin and St Barts.

The first beach at Sile Bay had lots of shells along the shore the last time I was there. I went in the water there, but I suggest you be careful not to fall on the slippery rocks as you enter.

Jibralta, a visitor who explored every beach in Anguilla, writes: [Click for larger view of Sile Bay]

We had a wonderful time on the east side of Sile Bay, also a safe snorkel spot for wimps like me and Bean, and yes the rocks are slippery and do require shoes. There is NO need for a 4WD for Sile, just don't get stuck in the sand.
Separating the first and second beaches is an odd concrete structure of about 100 yards that effectively makes a giant children's wading pool!

I first explored Sile Bay because Joellen Samojla was trying to find a beach where she snorkelled years ago (1994) and saw hundreds of star fish. It wasn't Sile Bay, but we think it might have been Rendezvous Bay.
[Click for larger view of Sile Bay]

If you walk all the way to the point, you look back across the sandy curve and the rocky curve to the coast line.

Behind the sandy beach and all along the rocky point, there are tidal pools with interesting sea life. This is a good spot for exploring.

Directions: From airport parking lot, take the only exit and turn left on Airport Road. Drive straight past Island Car Rental and the National Bank of Anguilla, and turn right at the traffic light. Follow this road for several miles. At the roundabout, take the right fork over Sandy Hill and continue to the East End pond.

Take the second paved turn off after the East End Clinic in East End Village. The main road curves left around the pond and continues to Island Harbour, but you turn off at the sign for Heritage Collection, a museum worth visiting in its own right. Go up the hill to the museum and turn right just after it on another paved road, then take a left and go down the hill. At the bottom you bear right and switch to dirt through a sandy "bottom", with pond and palm trees to the left, then on to the southern coast, where the road dead ends at Sile Bay. The distance from Heritage Collection to Sile Bay is 0.6 KM.

Hair Show!!!

[Click to enlarge] Anguilla was treated to a spectacular hair show on 3rd October held at the fitting locale of Rumza (formerly L.A. Cafe).

Hairdressers from Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, St. Thomas, New York and host country Anguilla created stunning hair styling innovations to a thrilled audience.

Scores of local models displayed the hair styles. The Caribbean Hair and Beauty Show organizes an annual hairshow which is rotated through the participating countries.

Thanks to Anguilla's own Gwyneth Richardson and her team for executing such an entertaining show.

President of the Watercolor Society of Oregon, Garve taught his first watercolor painting class for Portland Community College in 1972, where he taught continuously for 27 years. Garve teaches by example with daily morning demonstrations and discussions explaining his philosophies and techniques, followed by on-site painting where Garve assists each student individually. At the end of the day, a critique session is conducted in which each student's work is evaluated and given positive suggestions for improvement.

Koal Keel !!

KoalKeel Restaurant reopens for breakfast, lunch and dinner on November 20, 2004. Also reopening on the KoalKeel grounds are Le Petit Patissier, offering superb baked delicacies; The Old Rhum Shop, with over 100 varieties of Caribbean Rums; and Le Dome Wine Cellar, winner of the 1999 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, for the discriminating connoisseur of fine wines and spirits.

Located in Anguillas Old Valley, in the historic plantation house known as the 'Wardens Place,' KoalKeel offers guests the opportunity to relax in an old-time Caribbean setting, learning a bit of island history, and experiencing culinary delights.

Executive Chef Scott Gerow's exquisite, innovative cuisine is an intoxicating blend of Mediterranean and island-influenced flavours. Chef Gerow infuses the signature Euro-Caribe style with an upbeat, fresh, exotic flair using only the freshest ingredients. Formerly of renowned New York restaurants , Matthews and Monzu, Chef Gerow has designed a menu integrating his metropolitan background with a zesty splash of Caribbean cuisine. Signature dishes include Curry-Grilled Crayfish, Shaved Green Apple and Coconut Emulsion and Island Grouper Steamed in Banana Leaves, with Saffron Orzo and Pigeon Peas in a Chorizo-Mussel Broth. Not to be missed is the succulent Lamb, slow roasted in KoalKeels 200- year-old traditional Rock Oven.

Executive Pastry Chef Geraud Lavest from Auvergne, France, who has been lauded for his dessert creations in Cannes, Lisbon and Buenos Aires includes in his dessert menu Oven Roasted Pineapples macerated with Vanilla Bourbon; Ginger-infused Jus de Cuisson with a Passion Fruit Sorbet; and Lemon- perfumed Milk Chocolate Dome with a Raspberry Caramel Cream and Pistachio Sauce.

Rounding out the team are Sommelier Eric Hastings of Colorado, Manager Michael Abraham of Trinidad, and Assistant Manager Candis Niles of Anguilla.

Inspired by Anguillas evolving tourism industry, restaurateurs Lisa and Alan Gumbs promise to continue KoalKeels distinctive legacy as a leading gourmet establishment. "We are determined to bring back the legendary dining experience of KoalKeel, not only with its former allure, but with an even higher standard of excellence," Alan says. His wife, Lisa who assembled KoalKeels current team, joins the staff as a Pastry Chef at Le Petit Patissier. Her vision has elevated the Patisserie to new heights by offering French, American and Caribbean pastries, specialty breads, and other delights. KoalKeels refreshing sorbets and mouth-watering brownies have also become island favourites.

Returning KoalKeel to its functioning grandeur has been a labour of love for all participants. "We called on the people originally involved in the restoration and interior design of the building to recreate the legend" Alan says. Architect Adrian Kobbe of Kobbe Designs, who was responsible for KoalKeels original restoration, has renovated key architectural design elements in the new KoalKeel.

Also back on board is designer Suzanne Seitz. "Suzanne gives us fantasy," Lisa explains. "KoalKeels first incarnation had the signature French sleigh bed in the courtyard. Suzanne put the bed there, so she came back to do it again except this time more luxuriously it will really be a conversation piece."

KoalKeels guests will experience a rare combination of fine dining, excellent service, and sensory appeal. Chef Gerow promises extraordinary degustations and culinary delights, accompanied by a selection of world-class wines from the restaurants award-winning wine cellar, while the settings already exotic ambiance is enhanced by lush fabrics, rattan chairs, Limoges china, classic French-designed silver cutlery and crystal glass, as well as thick, decorative carpets and luxurious drapery, all blending together to create a rich, enchanting feast for the visual senses.

After a stroll through the tropical gardens, a glass of champagne under the sleigh beds romantic canopy, or an incredible dessert in the lovely, old 'Great House,' dining at KoalKeel will always be more than just a visit to a restaurant.

"KoalKeel offers a great experience," says Alan Gumbs. "We are committed to making it a unique experience, not only in Anguilla, but in the Caribbean. Our aim is to make your visit to KoalKeel enjoyable and unforgettable, not only for the first time you dine with us, but as you come back to join us again and again."

Children's Baseball in Anguilla

Nancy Michaels writes: Last Jan. you had a piece in the newsletter about the Fledgling Baseball League needing help with equipment. I thought I would fill you in on what has happened.
My name is Nancy Michaels and I live in Montgomery NY, I have been going to Anguilla since 1988 and stay at Rendezvous Bay Hotel and I have fallen in love with the people and the place. I most always go in March so when I read your story I decided to do what I could.
My son, Bob Michaels is Vice President of the Middletown Little League, a neighboring town to me. This was perfect. He said they had a lot of equipment laying around that had been replaced by new. When I went last March I met with George Carty and Calvin Hughes and found out what they needed etc. They seem very dedicated and are so nice.
So finally on July 9 I shipped 7 boxes of bats, uniforms, shoes, catchers equipment, helmets, and gloves, the gloves I collected from different people, LL doesn't provide them to the kids, one man I buy antiques from brought me about 10 gloves and wouldn't take any money for them. The shipping was about $400 and the Middletown Little League paid for all of that. We also sent a LL rules book to help them. As more equipment becomes available we will continue to supply what we can. I thought this was a good thing for the kids here as well as the kids in Anguilla.
Wouldn't it be great if one day they could play ball together?
