Flower Show 2004

[Click to enlarge] In 2004, the show and competition were held at Wallblake House on February 28 and 29.

A large crowd turned out to see the flower arrangement competition, the booths selling plants, crafts, and pottery, plus the garden displays by various hotels, primary schools and the Anguilla Garden Center.

You can read about last year's show.

And the Agriculture Department booth was selling delicious vine-riped fresh tomatoes!

There were three main groupsarrangements of flowers, plants growing in containers and garden displays. The flower arrangements include fresh flowers in a vase, flowers grown in Anguilla, foliage without flowers, single flowers, dried arrangements, miniature arrangements and creative arrangements using a decorated container or driftwood. The plants include flowering plants, foliage, indigenous plants, cacti, succulents, hanging baskets and miniature gardens.

The bright yellow and orange arrangement pictured below is by "Black Orchid Florist", a young professional flower arranger who was new to us. He specializes in events, and has done weddings at Cap Juluca. Tel: 264.497.2413. Black_OrchidFlorist@hotmail.com

New Road

The new Blowing Point-to-Little Harbour road appears to be open.

But looks can be deceiving. At the press conference, yesterday Kenn Banks said that the new road, although completed is not officially open to the public. Evidently they have to wait for the Governor to sign a document that the Attorney General is preparing!! It should be signed next week. (Thanks to Brenda Carty for report from the press conference).

Roaring Lions Childrens Football Program

The Roaring Lions Club, three-year reining champions of the Anguilla Football Association Football League have organised a football program for the youths between the ages of four (4) and twelve (12) years old. Special thanks goes out to Jeff who was visiting Anguilla last December for being instrumental in launching the program. Sunset Homes, a Home Design and Building company on the island jumped on board to sponsor the program.

The football youth program started in December 2003 and about twenty-five children participate currently. There is still room for more children to join, as the team of coaches can cater for up to fifty children. It is hoped that other sporting teams will be inspired to offer various youth programs throughout the island.

Anguilla Forums:
Anguilla Forum
Carib On-line

The coaches from the Roaring Lions team are enthusiastic and full of energy, as they donate their time and expertise to create fun and exciting football sessions for the children. Coaches include Nigel Nico Connor, Shomari Chichi Kentish, Lester Fishy Connor, Clarence Bailey Lake, Livingston Poti Clifton, Leon Jeffers, Terrence Casa Rogers, Iston Iceman Benjamin and other Roaring Lions team members.

The program is now focusing on teaching the children the fundamental skills of football such as passing, dribbling and ball control. As the children advance, the coaches will interweave the rules of the game, mindful of keeping the tone light and fun for their young participants. There are plans to expand the program and bring in various resource persons from time to time, to include other elements such as academic and self development learning opportunities for the children.

The Roaring Lions Football team, which features footballers mainly from Stoney Ground and The Quarter, had its beginnings in 1979 and remains very active in the football arena. Every year end they organise an appreciation event for their team forerunners and invite their past players to join them in an Old versus New game.

Sessions take place every Saturday from 8am 10am. Participation is free of charge. Interested children should come to the park at 8am on Saturday morning. If you have any questions call Poti at 772-3506 or 497-8412 or Nico at 497-0808.

Visitor Report from Rendezvous Bay

The Vincent family from Montreal Canada writes:

"We spent an amazing week in January at Bow Green villa and I would like to tell anyone thinking of taking a family to Anguilla on vacation how wonderful it is to rent a villa. We think Rendevous Bay, which is about 2 minute walk from Bow Green is the best beach in the Caribbean and we have been to many, many islands in the W.I. Our family of 5, included a 9 month baby and after a morning on the beach which is so safe for children we retired to the pool at the house and spent the warmer hours around a very pleasant and beautiful garden, dipping in the pool whenever we felt like it.

The house feels like your own holiday home as it has all the little things to make your stay more comfortable - large TV, DVD player, CD player etc., air-conditioning, ceiling fans and an amazing roof top patio which is a very romantic spot in the evening as you overlook St. Maarten twinkling with all the lights. The house also comes with an amazing housekeeper, Darlene, who was able to answer any questions we had on shopping and getting around and really made our week very memorable.

We plan to come back to Anguilla as we found the people very warm and welcoming and the island very beautiful.

Mom and Pop Owned Rentals

On the Anguilla Forum, "Ken" asks:

"Our main stay has generally been small no frills family owned operations, little bungalows, hotels & cottages. Beach side rooms with cabana boys don't really fit our program. Perhaps it's a simple place near the sea, or on a second floor in town, maybe it's on a back road on the hillside? We're simple people looking for a simple place with a kitchenette. Any suggestions for accommodations? Places like these don't always have web pages."
