Anguilla has many famous beaches such as Shoal Bay, Meads Bay and Little Bay. . . . | |
2003/01/05 - Click to enlarge pictures |
One such beach is Captains Bay on the north coast just before the eastern tip of the island. This quarter mile stretch of perfect white sand is bounded on the left by a rocky shoreline where Atlantic waves break spectacularly. There is one home, a large one, at this remote spot.
I do not recommend swimming at Captains Bay: the surf can be dangerous (and never swim alone at a remote beach.)
These pictures were taken on December 30, 2002, as we were exploring a new road that goes to Captains Bay. Some waves that day were breaking 20 feet high against the nearby cliffs and up to 16 feet on the beach.
Directions: Starting from the airport parking lot, take the only exit and turn left, then go straight past Island Rental Cars and the National Bank. Continue straight through the traffic light and on through Stoney Ground and Little Dix toward Island Harbour. Stay on the main road until it splits in two after the cement plant. Turn left and continue over the hill and into Island Harbour village.
As you leave the village, you have two choices.
One choice is to turn left on Harbour Ridge Drive (toward Hibernia Restaurant). This road is paved for a while, then gravel. Go straight, then bear slightly right and follow the new telephone poles (which lead all the way to Captains Bay). When you get over the hill you will see the beach on the left. As the road switches from a rocky surface to sandy, take the first left, which goes right down to the beach.
Another choice is to continue up to the top of the hill and turn left on a gravel road after the Island Supermarket (toward Junks Hole). If you turn left in all cases, you will reach Captains Bay in 2.4 km (1.5 miles). Avoid tempting right turns at .5 km, .8 km, 1.9 km and 2.2 km.
And here is an older picture of Captains Bay, taken when we first moved to Anguilla in the late 90s.

The faciliy was
designed by world-reknowned architect
Myron Goldfinger, who donated his time and energy to help
make this project a reality. With an estimated construction cost of
$1,684,300, this breathtaking seven court Academy
aims to make Anguilla the tennis powerhouse of the Caribbean and provide
a year-round home for the hundreds of Anguillian children who have
previously honed their tennis skills during the Academy's
annual summer camp.
BUY A BRICK! Help build this facility.
All donations are tax-deductible in the USA if desired. The
opening fund drive will be the purchase of bricks for $100 US each, with names
of the donors inscribed. These bricks will be a walkway to
facility.
The architectural drawings are complete, the ATA has lined up
initial sponsors, and Mitch's goal is to reach $200,000
and break ground
by March 2003, with grand opening in early 2004.
This Academy has existed for seven years and has made many friends.
In just the first week, Mitch has received pledges of $75,000
from 3 individuals.

Anguilla's third wetland bird count Contributed by Karim Hodge (ANT) and Steve Holliday (RSPB)Anguilla's third island-wide wetland bird count took place on saturday 28th December. A small team of 15 interested birdwatchers, both locals and visitors, counted herons, egrets, ducks and wading or shore birds on 21 of the island's ponds and salt ponds. The count was organised by the Anguilla National Trust (ANT) with assistance from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) based in the UK.

A total of 1710 birds of 32 different species were found on the count. This figure included some record counts for the island: 370 semi-palmated sandpipers, 285 blue-winged teals, 179 least sandpipers and 84 black-bellied plovers. These birds have have flown down from breeding grounds in the US and Canada to spend the winter in the Caribbean. Some species such as the black-bellied plover breed in the Arctic and their journies to Anguilla are longer than many of the tourists now arriving on the island. This year's count is 660 higher than last year which is probably a result of higher water levels in the ponds following heavy rain in Novemebr. This has benefitted ducks which feed in deeper water such as the 184 white-cheeked pintails, a resident bird in much of the Caribbean. Other species such as black-necked stilts appear to have found their feeding areas less suitable with only 145 present compared to 259 last year.
The Anguilla wetland count developed to get a more accurate picture of the birds using the island's many wetlands. All the ponds are counted in a single morning to get a full count of birds many of which will move around the island and may use a number of ponds over time. All 21 ponds held some wetland birds but the largest numbers are currently on Gull Pond (273 birds), Long Pond near Sandy Hill (263 birds), Little Harbour, Caul's and West End ponds.
Visitors coming to Anguilla should look out for both great and snowy egrets, a few great blue herons, 3 tri-coloured herons which are unusual on Anguilla, white-cheeked pintails and moorhens. A good variety of wading or shore birds is present with several whimbrels, killdeers and both greater and lesser yellowlegs especially obvious just now.
The ANT hopes the wetland bird counts will draw attention to the importance of Anguilla's wetlands for resident and migratory birds and help to track changes as part of the long-term monitoring of the ecological health of the ponds. For further information on Anguilla's biodiversity and cultural heritage contact the ANT at [email protected].

Boopsies: New Store in Historic Soda Factory
Young entrepreneur Tayna Gumbs, pictured right, opened a new shop in The Quarter today. Boopsies is located across the street from Mary's Bakery and specializes in local craft works and women's fashions.
Until Tayna took over and cleaned it out, the building still housed Joe Gumbs soda-making factory, which was at its peak in the 30s. She made a display out of the original bottling equipment and some of the old bottles.
One corner of her store has a "stranded on a tropic island" theme: hand-made bathing suits, Anguillian Pyrat rum, and a selection of old-time Anguilla books. Everything you need when you are stranded.

Having decided to rent out the private suite at Beachtech, naturally it had to be redecorated, with new curtains added and new furniture too. And then the web site had to have new pictures, so it was completely redone.
The new web site now has pictures of all the amenities, plus an activity page showing all the fun things you can do within walking distance, the mandatory photo tour and a page of web links about Anguilla.
