With the full moon shining brightly over Rendezvous Bay, Bankie Banx hosted his 10th annual Moonsplash Music Festival March 17-19 at the newly reconstructed Dune Preserve. . . . | |

Guest article by Randy Hannan
The three-day event was an unqualified success as prodigious amounts of music, food and drink were enjoyed by hundreds of attendees.
Just four months ago, the Dune Preserve, Bankie's eclectic beach bar overlooking Rendezvous Bay, was totally wrecked by Hurricane Lenny. Despite the setback, Bankie was determined to keep alive his ten-year tradition of holding Moonsplash under the March full moon. With a lot of effort and a little bit of luck, everything came together just in time to make Moonsplash magic.
On Friday night, the sounds of saws and hammers putting the final touches to the Dune gave way to the sounds of Bankie Banx and his Dune People jamming on the Moonsplash Main Stage. As the night rolled along, Frenchie from Jersey added her soulful harmonies to the musical mix. Anguilla's Kingniah I led the band through reggae favorites like Redemption Song. Sheriff Uncle Bob from New York put his slide guitar through the paces on country classics by Hank Williams, Jr. and others. Next up, the Anguillian group High Tension played to an appreciative crowd of several hundred party-goers. On Saturday, the Midnight Band from St. Croix was the top attraction, rocking the party until the early morning hours.
Pictured below are the New Dune Preserve, Wayne Brooks of Reggae Groovers, the stage view, and
drummer Tahira Banx.
The Sunday Beach Party definitely lived up to its name. A gorgeous day on the Rendezvous Bay beach made for a delightful time by partygoers who came by land and by sea for the festivities. The Moonsplash Main Stage featured the Reggae Groovers, a talented Anguillian group that kept the energy level high with their solid performance. Later in the afternoon, Bankie and his Dune People took to the stage again, but this time with a very special guest performer, famed Hollywood actor and musician Kevin Bacon. With 11-year-old Tahira Banx (Bankie's daughter!) keeping the beat on the drums, Kevin, Bankie and the Dune People jammed for a three-song set that put an exclamation point at the end of a very enjoyable Moonsplash 2000 Music Festival.
Pictured below are Montana Pam, Kevin Bacon with Sheriff Uncle Bob, and the Dune View.
Planning is already underway for Moonsplash 2001. Visit Bankie's website at www.bankiebanx.com for more details as they become available.

New to Anguilla?
Comfort |
As well as the crafts, the ladies opened their fair to other local artisans who had tables spread around the gardens, wherever there was a nice shade tree.
This year the fair featured a gas-powered Hot Dog Cart, borrowed from Cinnamon Reef Resort. Under a shady umbrella, Joan Hill served up big juicy Hebrew National kosher hot dogs, with your choice of condiments, including Sauerkraut and authentic NY Onion Relish.
Also new this year, the student artists of Anguilla had a displays, showing and selling their watercolours and oils. The quality was very high, as you can see in the pictures here.
The event was most enjoyable and civilized - they even had
the professional art works from the Anguilla International
Art Festival on display on the veranda.
Spanish Galleon Medallions. Limited-edition replicas of 18th century devotional medals recovered from the wreck of the El Buen Consejo have gone one sale in Anguilla. We saw a display case of them at the Sonesta gift shop yesterday. There are 12 different replicas, available in a sterling silver and various gold finishes, according to their web site, which has a lot of detail on what each medal depicts: Click Here.
Lower Internet Charges. Cable and Wireless has announced that as of April, 2000, they are reducing Internet charges across the Caribbean by an average of 37%.
Searching for Family History. Charlie Wood (email: [email protected]) writes:Recently, while doing a family history search, I discovered that my family comes from Anguilla. Are there any records of newspaper articles from the 1950's? I am interested in a fire in 1959 that killed John Proctor Lake Jr. in the East End. I am also interested in the funeral of Mary Isabella "BELLA" Hawley-Lake. I believe she passed in 1961. Can you be of any assistance?Charlie invites anyone with information on these events and persons to communicate with him via email.

CuisinArt Feedback.
Here is a picture of the CuisinArt Resort that I snapped from the third floor art gallery of their new spa (click to enlarge). And here is an article by Peter Schaeffer (email: [email protected]) posted to the Anguilla Tête-à-Tête Forum:Just got back from a week at CuisinArt after hurricane ruined Cap Juluca plans. Resort is great. Food is great and the staff most accomodating. After vegatation matures the place wil be spectacular. Not as intimate as CJ and rooms are somwhat less charming (the bathrooms are great). To see comments on this posting, or to add your own comments if you have stayed at CuisinArt, Click Here. The pool and restaurant area are the best on the Island and lend themselves to conversation with other guests. They truly treat children well and my kids would return tomorrow.
Perhaps the biggest decision facing CJ lovers is which resort to visit when CJ is up and running. Unfortunately, guests at CuisinArt including myself are not sure which resort we would visit next time as CuisinArt is top notch. Many of CJ staff is now at CuisinArt and plan to work both resorts when CJ reopens. Staff has great respect for CuisinArt management and owner, who must be treating them well. A great place to visit ---you will not be disapointed. This resort will scramble to the top of the best resorts lists.
