Anguilla Wins Wedding Contest!

The annual Today Throws a Wedding series has been a highlight of the NBC News' Today Show for the past five years. Viewers of the Today Show voted Cap Juluca as the Destination Wedding locale.

Today Show Producers had previously hand-picked Cap Juluca and Anguilla to be one of the four destinations in contention for the winning couple Nikki Hensley & Roger "Buddy" Butler from Kentucky. Some 219,000 viewers voted online for the four contending locations. The other destinations included Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, The Biltmore Estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Lake Placid Lodge in upstate New York.

In keeping with Today Show Throws a Wedding series tradition, viewers get to vote on the major details of the wedding, including the destination itself. Each Wednesday leading up to the date the couple ties the knot, the show's audience of some 6,200,000 will be presented with choices of many elements of the wedding for which they can vote, ranging from the choice of wedding gown to wedding cake, and more.

Anguilla is the just the perfect spot for weddings and honeymoons with its serenity, stunning beaches, fine dining and warm people and we look forward to see how NBC captures the magic of this experience.

Multi-award winning Cap Juluca is a secluded, sophisticated and romantic 179 acre retreat with 58 spacious luxury rooms and junior suites, seven suites and six pool villas located in 18 very private white Moorish style two story beachfront villas. All rooms have ocean views and are air-conditioned. There is a junior Olympic sized swimming pool and a choice of two beaches: the white stretch of sand of Maundays Bay and Cove Bay, another 1.5-mile sandy beach.

Anguilla Yoga Studio & Retreat Center

Jeanne-Marie Derrick runs the Anguilla Yoga Studio and Retreat Center in South Hill. Since 1983, she has been committed to learning principles of asana and related philosophy of yoga. She holds a certification in Iyengar Yoga, and is known for her understanding of the therapeutics and biomechanics of yoga asanas, and innovative ideas of how to apply the Iyengar method to a diverse population. She is well versed in yoga for women, and has written a book for women called Yoga for Menstruation, in which she draws on her extensive knowledge of women's health issues as they relate to yoga. Jeanne-Marie is currently involved in writing and illustrating children's yoga storybooks.

Public Yoga Classes: Come with an empty stomach, comfortable clothing and a curiosity about the subject and be guided through a series of specifically sequenced poses that will safely encourage the flexibility and strength of the body and mind. All classes are taught at a general level. All levels are welcome. Those with specific therapeutic concerns please contact Jeanne-Marie before attending class. Yoga props provided. Tuition for a single group class - $12.00 US.

Anguilla resident Kathy Haskins writes: What I really like about Jeanne Maries group class is that it feels like being in a private class. The classes are kept small so she can give individual attention to each student making sure that everybody is doing the pose with good alignment, which is important to avoid injuries. In addition, her classes suit students from beginners to advance as well as people with specific injuries because she is able to provide each student with individual instruction on how to get the most out of the pose. The use of props allows the students to do poses that are difficult in ordinary yoga classes (especially someone like me who has no flexibility what so ever). I have attended classes in the States at the well known Kripalu Yoga Centre that boasts some very well known top yoga teachers and can honestly say that Jeanne Marie ranks right up there with teachers like Steven Cope. Anyone living in or visiting Anguilla that is interested in yoga should take the opportunity of studying yoga with Jeanne Marie.

Public class schedule: Monday and Wednesday - 5:00 - 6:30 PM. Tuesday and Thursday - 9:30 - 11:30 AM.
Private Yoga Sessions: Group classes often cannot address specific questions for personal requirements, and concerns. Private yoga allows a student to receive the full benefit and understanding of a practice tailored to their needs. For private yoga appointment and fees, contact Jeanne-Marie.

Yoga Retreat held at La Sirena Hotel: Jeanne-Marie will be conducting a weeklong yoga retreat from March 2-9, 2005 at La Sirena Hotel on Meads Bay in Anguilla. We will focus on the essential quality of asana practice, integrating the breath, to bring about a quality of quiet contemplation. Renowned for some of the most outstanding beaches in the Caribbean, Anguilla makes the perfect island retreat, with its miles of powder white sand beaches, fine restaurants, and quiet tropical atmosphere. For more information and to register for the Yoga retreat contact: [email protected] Phone: 264-497-6827

To contact Jeanne-Marie Derrick: e-mail [email protected] Web site: www.jeanne-marie.com phone: 264-497-6606. Directions: When driving east or west through South Hill on the main road, a sign for the Anguilla Yoga Studio is at the entrance of a dirt road which leads to a development called Central West Resorts. The Yoga studio is in a building on the left just as you enter the development. There you will see a second Yoga sign indicating the location of studio.

Waterspouts

Steve Donahue writes: It has been very calm here the past week, without even a quick little shower. At midweek, the sea was flat as glass, and the temperature made it feel like bathwater. But yesterday, a very narrow line of clouds came over from the southeast and - while it bought no rain to land - did spawn at least 6 waterspouts that we saw off of Shoal Bay West. The one in the photo (notice the smaller one to the right) was just west of Little Anguillita Island on the western tip of the Island. With each one, we could see it kicking up the water on the surface. Click the link above to see his photo.

Weblinks Issued First Telecommunications License

Telecom competition comes to Anguilla: the Public Utilities Commission has issued Weblinks Limited the first telecommunications license in Anguilla's recently liberalized telecommunications market. Weblinks, a locally owned telecommunications company since 1999, won the competitive bid for the license in December 2003, beating out DigiCel. A second license was won by Wireless Ventures (Anguilla) Ltd. in April 2004.

Weblinks is poised to hit the ground running, having already installed and tested a state-of-the-art GSM cellular network over the past year. The only hurdle now facing Weblinks is interconnection of their network with C&W's network to allow C&W's customers to call Weblinks' customers. This could be completed in as little as 45 days.

When asked for comments, both Hodge and Webster stated that the hard work had only just begun. "One of the objectives of Weblinks is to dramatically reduce the cost of telecommunications in Anguilla. Our marketing slogan 'Talk IS Cheap' is backed up by our low rates, some less than 50% of C&W's existing rates."

They further commented: "When our company Weblinks introduced High-Speed Internet to Anguilla, we were obstructed by the existing monopoly and we had to go to court to enforce our constitutional rights to provide telecommunications services in our own land. We won that battle, but it cost time and money that would have been better spent developing Anguilla and Anguillians."

"This licence document eliminates the questions that these neutral parties might have in their minds. In other words, it removes hindrances and obstacles out of Weblinks' way that could only otherwise be removed by long and costly court battles. Most importantly, the issuance of the license enables Weblinks to commence negotiations with Cable & Wireless over interconnection terms."
