Sunset Homes Annual Community Fun Day

Sunday August 29 was full of sporting fun for the children and young adults in the Stoney Ground/Cauls Bottom area. Sunset Homes sponsored its second annual Fun Day which brought much of the residents of the area for an afternoon of games. The event gives an opportunity for the parents and children in the neighbourhood to come together and organize the event and then partake in a positive, fun afternoon.

The kids in the neighbourhood cleaned up the playing field and set up the makeshift football goals days before the much-anticipated event. Events included sack races, filling the water bottle, football, cricket, bouncing castle frolicks and a fierce hula-hoop competition. There was comical live commentary over the P.A. system by two of the residents which kept the competitions stiff yet funny.

The theme for prizes was useful school supplies, just in time for the opening of school.

Various community members coordinated the event notably Mrs. John Johnson, Ms. Alma Gumbs and Bernard and Linda Joseph. Thanks to other key persons who also donated their time: Nigel (Nico) Connor, Gene (Gen Gen) Proctor and Alfred (Alli) Douglas. Music was provided by Clifton (Bango) Bryan and Joslyn Lake.

Frances: Tropical Storm Force Winds Possible

From the Public Advisory at 5AM Monday: Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 85 miles (140 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km).

The detailed discussion of Frances from 5AM Monday projects Frances to pass north of us, through location 19.6N 62.0W in 24 hours. Our location is about 18.1N 63.1W.

This Distance Calculator web page, shows that Frances is projected to come within 197 KM of Anguilla. This means no hurricane winds, but we would be just on the edge of the tropical storm winds (39 to 73 mph).

Update: phew, Frances passed north of us without serious impact on Anguilla. ......Permanent link for this news item.

Watercolour Workshop

The Anguilla Arts Festival is bringing Garve Beckham to the island to teach a watercolour workshop this fall (last week in November, first week in December). He is teaching specifically watercolors, but he is well-versed in other mediums and will have other students here with him painting acrylics, so all are welcome. Garve will also be judging the art show this year together with Susan Sikes, which will be on display the first full week in December. The workshop itself (excluding meals/lodging) cost US$200/person, and runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Each day will begin with a critique of the previous day's paintings, followed by a demonstration by Garve. After the demonstration, the group will grab a lunch, then paint from 1:00-4:00. The contact persons this year for workshop registration are Carolle and Courtney Devonish. Tel: (264) 497-2949 fax: (264) 497-2735. E-mail: [email protected]

Donate to Provide a Bus for the Seniors

Edward Leclerc writes:

"As missionaries to Anguilla, we are raising funds of $16,500 USD to donate a 1992 International DT Diesel 26-passenger Bus to the Miriam Gumbs Senior Citizens Home. Presently, there are seniors who are rendered shut-ins for the simple reason that they have no wheelchair-accessible vehicle, forcing them to miss out on much-needed recreational activities, family events, weddings and even funerals for their friends and loved ones."

"Fully equipped with an automatic wheelchair lift and adequate space for wheelchairs, this bus will enable seniors who are confined to wheelchairs, as well as those who have trouble with steps, to once again play an active and visible role in their community. Lets show our elders that they are loved, honoured and valued by the people of Anguilla!"

"We thank you in advance for your generous support. Please make your cheque payable to Anguilla Health Authority. As a result, you will greatly enrich the lives of Anguillas senior citizens for years to come."

This campaign is authorized by the Health Authority and all cheques should be made out to "Health Authority of Anguilla". Edward can pick up your cheque or you can bring it to AHA office in the Valley. However, it would be good if people can let Edward know of their pledge (Edward & Leanne Leclerc, [email protected], (264) 729-2505), so he can know how much more they need to raise.
