Positive Feedback on E's Oven
After our story on Vernon Hughes and his restaurant, E's Oven, Judy Cox
([email protected]) sent this testimonial to Janine Edwards,
our new reporter:
Hello Janine.
My spouse & I absolutely love Anguilla. We have visited the island four
times from our home in Toronto, Ontario. We have just arrived home from a brief one week vacation in Anguilla and
have read the article in Bob Green's website introducing yourself and your
article feature E's Oven Restaurant was an uncanny & timely coincidence.
I'd like to tell you that Eric & I found E's Oven on this trip and did not
want to eat elsewhere. The food was prepared wonderfully and, as Canadian's
with a very undervalued dollar, we found their prices to be reasonable. The
venue was clean & delightful and we found eating there to be an uplifting
experience.
Upon completion of our last meal there (which I believe was the
fourth), I asked the sweet, young waitress (who I believe is the Hughes's
niece) if she would give the chef my compliments and I made the suggestion
that she put together and sell a recipe book. She thanked me for the
compliment but, I don't know if she realised how serious I was!
Then, we
arrived home, read the recent report on Bob's web site and you featured the
fish cakes recipe. Unfortunately, we cannot obtain trigger fish in Canada
so I will not be able to try this recipe but I was hoping that Peggy Hughes
might be willing to pass on the carrot soup recipe or the chicken breast
with cream sauce.
We have already planned our next vacation to Anguilla for two weeks starting
at the end of July 2002 and plan to eat a meal at E's Oven daily.
Considering that we have several months of winter ahead of us, it seems like
an eternity.
Please pass on my appreciation and best wishes for a great season to the
Hughes from Eric & myself. We live in a city of four million people (and
many chefs) and we find it difficult to find food of that quality in any
Toronto restaurant!
With warm regards,
Judy

Anguilla Mentioned in Travel Magazine.
Susanne Thevenet ([email protected]) writes:
The Dec. issue of Conde Nast Traveller arrived today and on page 112 is an article entitled "More Sun for Less Money" with some photos and illustrations. It begins:
"It's that time of year again. The desire for a quick, sunny and affordable break is overwhelming. The good news is that there is no shortage of exciting places to escape to. Here are 25 of the best."
Anguilla is the first mentioned, on page 114. The text is as follows:
"Under the sun: If any place can be described as bipolar, it's this laidback island just five miles from St. Martin. It's flat, scrubby, dry, unprepossessing -- but many Caribbean islands would be grateful for just one of the estimated 33 powder-white beaches. It has luxe resorts (Cap Juluca, Maliouhana) as well as small, unpretentious inns that, given their spectacular settings, give endless bang for your endless-sun bucks. Rendezvous Bay Hotel and Villas has funky, supremely relaxed old Caribbean charm, a new chef shaking things up in the kitchen, and bright-new villas on its endless beach. (264-497-6549, rendezvousbay.com, doubles $120)."
"In contrast, the new five-room Madeariman Beach Club is an off-shoot of Madariman Reef Restaurant on Shoal Bay. Roll out of your bed and right into the surf (264-497-3833), madeariman.com, doubles $175-$225), or wander next door to Uncle Ernie's where the barbecue will set you back $10 and Heinekens go for $2."
"PREP: Anguilla Life magazine is free at most hotels. DISTANCE: 5 hours from New York."
There is also a 2 in. by 2in. photo of sand, water and sky. Thanks for keeping up the good work on the monthly newsletter and I enjoy Janine's articles.

Ed Scofield ([email protected]) writes:
My wife and I just returned from a lovely week on Anguilla and I
just wanted to drop a note to thank you for your excellent web site. In
planning our first trip to the island I took advantage of the wealth of
information on your site in many ways. I used the menus to choose
restaurants. I used the beaches guide to find remote spots (such as Dropsey
Bay and Captain's Bay). I found a source for beach chairs, umbrellas, and a
cooler (thanks to the wonderful Janine Edwards). I even brought home a map
from the Land & Survey office!
In short, your excellent web site greatly
enhanced our stay in paradise. We've traveled elsewhere in the Caribbean
but now I can't imagine going anywhere but Anguilla.
Thanks again.

Article on Anguilla in the Providence Journal .
Newspaper reporter visits Anguilla: Like many who venture beyond the theme-park islands of the Caribbean and discover Anguilla, my mind ponders various definitions of paradise. Without the typical beachside distractions, I'm forced to turn my attention to the beauty of the primal elements; the blushing sand, water that mimics the bluest sky, and gentle waves that caress the beach with a lover's touch.
The only sound I hear is the mummer of the waves that barely crest before lapping onto shore. The surf slips back into the deep leaving the sand golden instead of stained as one might expect from such inky blue water. The rhythm of the waves, nature's unerring clock, sets the schedule here, not 8-to-5 deadlines.
