Carnival 98 was not just exciting boat races--it was music and dancing too. . . .

Music! Music! Music!

Music on the stages, on the beaches, and on the streets!

J'ouvert morning and Last Lap are exuberant and constantly moving street dances in The Valley. Anguilla's favorite bands appear on giant semi-truck trailers with their booming amplifiers and speakers. The fans and supporters dance after the bands, and follow them around the center of Anguilla for hours. Band members even climb to the top of the trucks and sing from there, as in the far right picture above.

By the time all the bands are blasting away in competition, the streets are jammed with dancers, watchers and just plain party-goers.

But that isn't all the music. Every night there are shows at the Carnival Village (aka Landsome Bowl), including music, calypso singing contests, talent contests, and more. If you stayed up every night until 3am for the carnival shows and made it to every street dance, parade and boat race-- you would not sleep for 10 days.

Hurricane Bonnie passed us by, as did Danielle. Considering how sunny and beautiful it was yesterday and today, it is hard to remember that we did have a few rainy days recently and some spectacular thunderstorms.

Summer Drama by Eulanda Dupie

[Click to enlarge] Anguilla's young people had an opportunity to participate in a drama workshop this summer, leading up to a musical production of Anne of Green Gables. Before school closed, the students undertook activities to prepare them for the play. During these workshops the students learned acting and musical skills for the show. There were afternoon classes to expose the members to script-reading and improvisation. Besides practising, we helped sell tickets, paint the setting and buy props for the show.

On one or two occasions, the director counselled us about being late and not taking the play seriously. One thing she always used to say was "always smile when you sing it brings good results". Eleanor Stacey, our director was a very fun person to be around. Even though she was busy at times, she always found the time to be there and help us in any way she could. [Click to enlarge]

We took three weeks to produce this show. The rehearsals were rather intense. When we had to learn the script and sing the right notes it was difficult, so we often helped each other with the singing. Working together was great.

Practising really paid off. The show was beautiful and it flowed well. There were 19 cast members and the performances were on July 27, 28 and 29, 1998. I can say for the whole cast it was a good learning experience.

Patsy's Seaside Villas

[Click to enlarge] "Psst. How about an apartment right on the beach with a great view of St. Martin, and at a great price?" We once met a tourist couple who raved on about Patsy's Seaside Villas, but then begged us not to tell anyone about them--they wanted Patsy's as their own little secret.

Now the secret is out. Local couple Margorie and Mitchell Connor have built and operate Patsy's Seaside Villas on Sandy Point beach near the ferry terminal. There are one and two bedroom villas, each fully furnished with kitchen, living room, television, and 6-days-per-week maid service. [Click to enlarge]

Prices are affordable at $125 per day for two bedrooms and $110 for one bedroom ($90 and $80 in the low season!). Plus 8% tax and 10% service charge.

The villa location is private, and there is a restaurant next door at the FerryBoat Inn. It is only a short walk to the village of Blowing Point, where you can catch the ferry to sophisticated St Martin, buy some of Biggy Jim's award winning ribs, or have a sandwich and a lemonade at Amy's Bakery.

Contact Mitchell Connor at 1-264-497-6297, fax 1-264-497-6871.

Updates and Feedback

Feedback on Students in New York. Tom Wright sent the following report on the some Anguillian summer students at State University of New York:
July 31st was a special day as twenty Anguillians graduated from summer courses at SUNY Cobleskill, NY. They were the first students to participate in the educational and training programs especially designed for people in Anguilla. Ten participated in Food Services and Hospitality programs and ten took Aguriculrure and Horticulture courses. Students did eighty hours of class room study and field work. Ages ranged from ninteen to mid forties. Some of the attendees work for Government and others are employed in the private sector.

SUNY Cobleskill is part of the NY State University system and has 2200 male and female students and over 300 instructors and support staff. It is located 35 miles West of Albany, N.Y.

The project had been under discussion since 1996 and came to fruition early this year when SUNY Cobleskill officials visited Anguilla and an Anguillian delegation traveled to Cobleskill to finalize details and arrangements. Several studemts have enrolled full time and others are expressing interest. For the 1998-99 school year, two scholarships have been made available for Anguillian students.

Plans are already underway for another group of students to attend SUNY Cobleskill next year. Long term plans include establishing a SUNY Cobleskill International Out-reach Educational and Training facility in Anguilla. Local Government officials are very supportive and are expected to give the project high priority in the future.

Web Sites About Anguilla

Travel Report. Drew Melby has a report on his trip to Anguilla on his web site, with lots of pictures, including an incredible shot of the surf at Mead's Bay.

Waterfront Sandy Ground Villa. See Susan Marfleet's 3 bedroom, 2 bath villa web page. Rates vary from $1000 to $2000 per week, depending upon the season.

Slick's Web Page. There is now a web page to help Slick Carty raise the money he needs to represent Anguilla at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney Australia. The page was created by Leroy Hill of Webdesigns and funded by Bob Green of the Anguilla Local News. Leroy will be adding news stories and progress reports to the site over the next few months.

Just for Fun. I came across these two pages while searching the Internet for Anguilla information. From what I can tell, they may have no real connection to Anguilla, but they do show that the name "Anguilla" may be turning into a trendy brand name, like "Bali". At these sites you can purchase a Miss Anguilla 1997 Doll or the Anguilla teak table.

News.ai is On Summer Break

With the end of Carnival week, the Anguilla Local News is taking a short summer vacation. We will still publish a truncated edition of the news every two weeks, but we won't be updating the indeces and cross-references. The next major issue is scheduled for October, with lots of news about the upcoming high season.
