Carnival 98 was not just exciting boat races--it was music and dancing too. . . .

J'ouvert morning and Last Lap are exuberant and constantly moving street dances in The Valley. Anguilla's favorite bands appear on giant semi-truck trailers with their booming amplifiers and speakers. The fans and supporters dance after the bands, and follow them around the center of Anguilla for hours. Band members even climb to the top of the trucks and sing from there, as in the far right picture above.

By the time all the bands are blasting away in competition, the streets are jammed with dancers, watchers and just plain party-goers.

But that isn't all the music. Every night there are shows at the Carnival Village (aka Landsome Bowl), including music, calypso singing contests, talent contests, and more. If you stayed up every night until 3am for the carnival shows and made it to every street dance, parade and boat race-- you would not sleep for 10 days.

Soroptomists Celebrate their 17 years of service on Anguilla with a dinner at the Anguilla Great House. Activities of the Soroptomist ladies that were highlighted: their day care center, public blood pressure checks, and visits to the Senior Citizens home. And, the Soroptomists have donated US $500 to Slick Carty to help him acquire a special sports wheelchair for the Paralympics.

Alfonso Brooks was named Employee for the Year at Cap Juluca.

Successful Fund Raising. The Malliouhana Hotel and Nigel Royden, Manager of the hotel, held a special fund raiser for a new classroom at the the Gloria Omolulu Institute, a privately operated primary school. The hotel raffled off a week's stay by selling tickets to its guests, and raised US $38,000 for the school.

Two Sons Funeral Home opened last month in North Hill. The modern facility was the creation on Allister Richardson, who is assisted by his brother Arinel as Director and wife Gerda as Operations Manager.

The goal of the Tae Kwon Do school is to teach discipline and self defense.

The school has a web site at danny.ai/karate.html with news of their recent competition in the United States, where they captured 21 medals.

The team for the US competition, which included, Black Belt, Edward Webster, Brown Belts, Lanford Morton, David Laud, Eric Laud, Mirabelle West, Delon Skellekie, and Angele and Devin Hodge, Red Belts Anton and Aidan Scipio, Purple Belt, Jelani Banks and Yellow Belts, Shridath Rey, Shevianw Hughes, Wayne Richardson, and Juan Gomez, was accompanied by team assistants, yellow belts, Phyllis Fleming-Banks and Cheryl Laud.

The Anguilla Tae Kwon Do Club is a Karate and Martial Arts School, which is held in North Valley's Methodist Church Hall in Anguilla. From the intersection of Queen Elizabeth and Coronation in The Valley, head up coronation through the row of mahogany trees. You will find the church on the left. Hurricane Bonnie passed us by, as did Danielle. Considering how sunny and beautiful it was yesterday and today, it is hard to remember that we did have a few rainy days recently and some spectacular thunderstorms.

On one or two occasions, the director counselled us about being late and not taking the play seriously. One thing she always used to say was "always smile when you sing it brings good results". Eleanor Stacey, our director was a very fun person to be around. Even though she was busy at times, she always found the time to be there and help us in any way she could.

We took three weeks to produce this show. The rehearsals were rather intense. When we had to learn the script and sing the right notes it was difficult, so we often helped each other with the singing. Working together was great.

Practising really paid off. The show was beautiful and it flowed well. There were 19 cast members and the performances were on July 27, 28 and 29, 1998. I can say for the whole cast it was a good learning experience.

Now the secret is out. Local couple Margorie and Mitchell Connor have built and operate Patsy's Seaside Villas on Sandy Point beach near the ferry terminal. There are one and two bedroom villas, each fully furnished with kitchen, living room, television, and 6-days-per-week maid service.

Prices are affordable at $125 per day for two bedrooms and $110 for one bedroom ($90 and $80 in the low season!). Plus 8% tax and 10% service charge.

The villa location is private, and there is a restaurant next door at the FerryBoat Inn. It is only a short walk to the village of Blowing Point, where you can catch the ferry to sophisticated St Martin, buy some of Biggy Jim's award winning ribs, or have a sandwich and a lemonade at Amy's Bakery.

Slick's Web Page. There is now a web page to help Slick Carty raise the money he needs to represent Anguilla at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney Australia. The page was created by Leroy Hill of Webdesigns and funded by Bob Green of the Anguilla Local News. Leroy will be adding news stories and progress reports to the site over the next few months.

Just for Fun. I came across these two pages while searching the Internet for Anguilla information. From what I can tell, they may have no real connection to Anguilla, but they do show that the name "Anguilla" may be turning into a trendy brand name, like "Bali". At these sites you can purchase a Miss Anguilla 1997 Doll or the Anguilla teak table.
