For details on the Anguilla Day ceremony, read this article in The Anguillian newspaper. Here is an excerpt

Anguilla Day was celebrated Tuesday June 1 as uniformed bodies converged on the Ronald Webster Park for the official parade witnessed by many officials and members of the private and public sectors. The parade comprised contingents from the Police, Scouts and Guides, Cub Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Pathfinders, Boys and Girls Brigade and Cadets. The various organisations were inspected by Chief Minister, Osbourne Fleming, accompanied by Commissioner of Police Keithly Benjamin and Parade Commander, Allan Carty....
In the afternoon, everyone moves from The Valley to Sandy Ground for the boat race. A large crowd follows the boats from the shore in their cars -- sort of a moving traffic jam, with lots of honking and yelling and fun. But an even bigger crowd stays on the beach at Sandy Ground, partying and eating until the boats return late in the day.

Superstar also received a trophy sponsored by Two Sons Funeral Home presented to its Captain Glen Paul. Second place was UFO, third place was Lady Maude, fourth place Light & Peace, and fifth place Eagle. Twelve boats started the race which lasted over five hours. Two of the boats dropped out after colliding with each other whilst going around the first stake.

Every Book Ever Written About the Caribbean

Have you ever looked at Mitchell's West Indian Bibliography, aka www.books.ai? For historians and antique book-lovers, it is amazing. For example, did you know that in 1807 James Parkyns DERRIMAN wrote "Marooned: The Story of a Cornish Seaman". (Emsworth, Hampshire: Kenneth Mason) 136 pages 22 cm pb, 10 ills, 1 map, index, [ca 1991]. Naval and admiralty. Royal Navy. Sombrero. Anguilla. The story of the marooning of R Jefferey on Sombrero by Captain W Lake in 1807. By a British author.

Great Response to "Island Books" Web Site

The response to the www.islandbooks.ai web site has been incredible. Visitors have brought enough reading books that there have been some for each of the primary schools. And more are on the way. Thanks so much!

Now we have a special book requirement that we hope someone can fulfill before school starts again in the fall.

The Alwyn Allison Primary School in West End is the only one of the primary schools that does not have a set of the PM Plus reading starter books. These books are excellent for igniting reading interest and skills in the early grades. They are available from the Rigby web site:

We can use the complete set ($225, but worth it) or the Non-fiction pak, or the add-on packages, in both level 1 and level 2. Any questions about this, check with Teacher Art at hurricaneart@caribcable.com

17th Annual OECS Bridge Tournament

The 17th Annual O.E.C.S. Tournament was a huge success for the Anguilla Bridge Association and Anguilla. About eighty (80) players attended from Martinique, Barbados, Antigua, Dominica, St. Kitts, St. Croix, the US and Anguilla. For many of the participants, this was their first trip to Anguilla and they were thrilled with their experience. The food catered by the Rendevous Bay hotel, the ambience of the setting at the LA Caf, and the friendliness of the staff and members of the Anguillan Bridge Association all contributed to the success.

The Prize Giving luncheon was held at the Rendevous Bay Hotel with Elkin Rogers bringing his words of congratulations to the club and the victors. Barbados walked away with two of the competitions - The Open Teams and the Swiss Teams. Martinique won the Open Pairs Competition and Antigua upset St. Kitts in the final of the National Team Competition. An Anguillan team finished 2nd in the Swiss Team category.

This was the first event of the recently formed Anguilla Bridge Association and is an important step in encouraging Bridge as a game for people of all ages. The club is committed to increasing the participation of local youth and adults through workshops. The Anguilla Bridge Association is indebted to the principal sponsors the National Bank of Anguilla, Caribbean Commercial Bank, the Government of Anguilla along with a range of businesses in Anguilla. Several young people were on hand to help with the execution of the tournament.

Anguilla Cares Campaign reaches US$11,000

From the Daily Herald newspaper by Brenda Carty:

On Tuesday another US$4000.00 was added to the thermometer of the Community Foundation, Anguilla Cares Campaign. Executive Director of the Community Foundation, Carrolle Devonish expressed delight at raising the bar as the campaign continues to bring in money for community projects on the island.

One of the corporate chairs of the campaign, Barbara Owen of Caribbean Cable Communications, painted the new amount on the thermometer. She said that her employees contribute each month to the campaign and the company matches their amount so that EC$500.00 is donated each month by the company. She challenged other companies to get involved and explained that every cent stays in the programme and is given back to the island, especially to children and educational projects. Last year grants were given to the Boys Brigade, Camp Be Aware, the Library Summer Programme, Family Planning, the Apple Theatre and the Optimist Club, among others. She noted that they are a small company and if they can do it many other businesses can too.

Chairperson of the Anguilla Cares Campaign, Bonnie Richardson-Lake thanked Caribbean Cable Communications for their support. She also thanked Cable and Wireless as the Community Foundation was able to raise US$630.00 at the concert sponsored by the company last month. She also added thanks to those who have already donated and pointed out that the campaign ends on May 30 and encouraged more donations before that date.
