Anguilla Construction:

This is the web site for the three villas that I built on Anguilla and the villa that I am
renovating in St Barts (see Azu Villa Renovation Page), plus
tropical construction tips and resources as well. These construction projects started in 1997, although
land acquisition and architectural planning started in 1995. Every stage of the construction is recorded here.
We rent the villa in St Barts and the guest cottage in Anguilla (La Vanda)
and the villa at the top of the Anguilla property (Mimosa), but we
keep the beachfront house and pool for our own use. And we
have created a name and web page for the overall completed property:

North America has 110V 60 cycles and Europe has 230V 50 cycles,
but St Barts has 230V 60 cycles!!
The only other places on the planet with this power are Saudi
Arabia and Korea, and perhaps Tahiti.
This means that all American appliances will work, if you use a transformer,
because they will have the proper cycles.
And many European appliances will work fine, since they don't care about
the cycles (light fixtures for example). But anything with a motor is
likely to run differently on 60 cycles when it was designed for 50.
And the US appliances are generally about 2/3 the price (or less), even here in St Barts.
And our house has old wiring. Only a few of the circuits are grounded
("Ouch! Can you turn out the lights tonight; its your turn!").
Here is a picture of our electrician, Antoine, who is rewiring the house
from top to bottom.
Next year we are thinking of putting in a solar/battery/invertor system like
we did in Anguilla, and add 110V wiring to the house as well. This provides
power after a hurricane and will allow us to switch all the US appliances over
to solar power and retire the bulky transformers.
