Coccoloba Hotel is now Meta Resort

Coccolaba Hotel has been sold to Montreux Group from the USA. They are planning to reopen it as a spa based on the wellness concept, with exercise and therapeutic faclities. The hotel was damaged in Hurricane Luis and is the only hotel in Anguilla that has not yet reopened. The new owners plan to repair the damage, refurbish the rooms and open for the coming season.

The Barrel Stay Reopens on Sandy Ground

Went down to Sandy Ground Sunday to see the warmup boat race for Carnival (the big races are Monday through Friday) and noticed that the Barrel Stay had been rebuilt. As you may recall, the original buildings put together out of discarded barrels were destroyed by Hurricane Luis last September. The building is still beach style, but more substantial looking. The main structure posts that hold the structure together are recycled telephone poles that Luis also made available (you can see the sawn off ends of them nearby with insulators still attached!). The final result is nicely decorated and comfortable, although the seats on the breezy side are more enjoyable on a hot summer afternoon.

They still make their special Fish Soup, the Anguillian speciality with the roule and croutons and cheese to play with. We shared one mixed salad one soup and one creme brulee for a light lunch and it was delicious and plenty to eat. Here is there current menu [ other menus].

New Area Code 264 "ANG"

Anguilla's will get its own area code in March 1997: 264. The general 809 Caribbean area code will continue to reach Anguilla for at least six months. Mark your phone book.

Arlo's Has Reopened

According to a posting on Julian's Anguilla Web site, Arlo's Italian restaurant in South Hill has finally reopened after last year's Hurricane Luis. Reported to have delicious food and reasonable prices. From the main road, turn north at Anguilla Trading and proceed to the coast. Closed on Sundays. 264-497-6810.

New Prison Handed Over

The British government is building prison's on all its Caribbean islands and ours has been constructed in record time (less than 10 months). From the prisoner's point of view, Anguilla's new prison is ideally located between the Caribbean Commerical Bank and the National Bank of Anguilla.

Pictured above is Oliver Brooks, the local contractor for the new prison, standing in front of the Maximum Security section. Project management was provided by Alan Veeran of Johnston Construction, a company located in the Turks and Caicos that does hotels, airports, and other major projects. This is one of the coolest buildings on the island, due to the double roof: a concrete roof with vent holes at the top, then an air space and another asphalt sheet roof. Quality of the construction is very high. Although the prisoners will have much better facilities than in our tiny old jail, those sentenced to hard labour no longer have a shady tree under which to break rocks (no kidding).

Bluebird Wins Champion Boat Race

Bluebird won the first race of carnival (the Heinekin regatta) and the final Champion of Champions race too.

Studio Hair Spa Salon

Anguilla has its own trendy spot for spa beauty treatments, the Studio. I sometimes even go there myself to get my hair cut by Paula. Summer services include all the salon treatments (hair, nails, waxing, makeup, wedding preparations), plus facials. When the masseuse is back from vacation, they add massage, aroma therapy, scalp therapy, and mineral water clay back treatment. Shopping: Curiosity Gift Shop

Curiosity is a new shop in South Hill with a nice selection of bathing suits, housewares, clothing, and gifts. It is located in the same building as the Red Dragon Disco where we went to the Over-30s Dance, which is held on the last Friday of every month starting at 10 PM. (photo). Anguilla Web Sites

Junior Fleming's web page has been updated with a picture of his glassbottom boat.

Julian Niles has added a Tete-a-Tete forum section to the Anguilla Web Site where people can post reviews of their visits to Anguilla. It is already full of comments on Blue Waters, Sonesta, Malliouhana, and Anguilla Great House. I should warn you though: most people's favorite hotel in Anguilla is the one they stayed in first.

We have updated our beach shack web site for the house we are building, including new plans for the software lab.

Steve Donahue has updated his home construction web site, including information on how to rent his new home and this news flash:

Aug. 19, 1996 - Caribbean Magazine has just named Maundays Bay one of the "50 Best" beaches in the Caribbean - along with Shoal Bay East and Little Bay beaches. They recommend "Time your visit for a full moon: With the silvered sea, the radiant beach, and the lights of St. Martin flickering in the background, Maunday's is pure magic."
