Tasty's with Art Murals

Artist Susan Croft has decorated the restaurant with fun murals and owner/chef Dale Carty has expanded the dining room into the space next door. The overall effect is very charming. The food, as always, remains excellent for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Anguilla Tennis Academy takes first step to facility - By Brenda Carty (The Daily Herald)

On Tuesday July 22 the Government of Anguilla and the Anguilla Tennis Academy signed a memorandum of agreement for the leasing of six acres of land at Blowing Point to build a state of the art tennis facility. The Government has agreed to lease the land to the Academy founded and led by Mitchelle Lake, who has run a tennis camp here for the past seven years.

The ceremony drew a large cross-section of the Anguillian public, including the Deputy Governor Mark Capes and Mrs Capes, as well as Ministers Eric Reid and Victor Banks, Permanent Secretaries Marcel Fahie and Ken Banks, as well as the Second Nominated Member Claudel Romney (see picture below).

The signing ceremony took place on the basketball court on the Blowing Point Road. The many visiting coaches for this summer's tennis camp helped cheer on the project (see picture below). Children participating in this years tennis camp also attended, with their parents.

The facility will comprise six lighted tennis courts, a stadium court with seating for one thousand and a building with showers, bathrooms, a conference room and pro shop, designed by Myron Goldfinger. Plans are to start construction in November 2003. In the meantime the Anguilla Tennis Academy is actively seeking funds from businesses, visitors, residents and friends interested in promoting tennis on the island. A buy a brick campaign is to be launched soon and will involve buying a brick for US$100.00 that will be inscribed with the purchasers name and used to pave the entrance to the facility. Further details on the project and on purchasing the bricks is available at www.tennis.ai

Lake said that after completion the project will provide opportunities for young children through the sport of tennis while strengthening the sense of community, knowledge and health and at the same time promoting sport tourism. He said that there will be regular tennis lessons for children and adults, and coaches from the USA will be employed. He has already appointed a committee for the project and has included several honorary members who have contributed to the sport over the years. As well as the every day use of the courts there are plans for inter-regional and international competitions as well as local league matches and tournaments.

Flash News: Two More Shows!

Last night we took guests and went to see the Apple Theatre young people's performance of "Journeys - an adventure in music and dance". The show is a musical revue of some of the greatest songs from hit Broadway shows and classic movie musicals. The performance was lively, fast-paced, and with some incredible young singers and dancers.

Program director/choreographer Nanci Lenaure Batista said "I really want to emphasize how proud I am of the entire cast. In two weeks they have gotten through 22 different numbers - now that's hard work! For many of these young performers, this is their first real taste of a full production, and boy was the pressure on."

The show repeats tonight and Saturday at the Stoney Ground Primary School.
