Unique Anguilla Venture: www.ArawakArtifacts.com
Wilma Vanterpool has launched the web site for her business, which is creating
museum-quality replicas of Arawak Indian Artifacts.
For example, the Zemi pictured here is
a replica of an ancient Arawak religious idol. The reproduction dimensions are
13" high, 5" deep, and 7" wide.
The replicas were designed by well-known Arawak artist Adam Azaire (Anakhuda Hororo)
who now lives in St Lucia. Specialists from the USA created the molds and helped
set up the casting operations in Anguilla so that they would be of the highest quality.
This project is the result of years of work, including a
trip to Guyana to visit the surviving Arawak Indians in the interior.
On the web site is a pictorial story of Wilma's trip of discovery to
Guyana.

Looking for a CD!
Debra Briganti writes
Hi. I recently visited Anguilla and was listening to a radio station that played Caribbean music except for on Saturdays when it broadcasted a cricket match. They kept playing a song by a female artist, I think from St. Croix, who does a lively song that has wet, wet, soaking wet in its lyrics. Do you know the artist? We want to buy the CD. Thanks!
The CD she refers to is done by the Express Band out of the USVI and the name of the song is "Wet". If you'd like to order this CD you can contact Patrick Hanley who has a music store here in Anguilla. You can reach him at:
[email protected] or call him during office hours at Tel. 264-497-3100.

Survey of Commercial Property in The Valley.
David Lockwood ([email protected]) sent this press release:
The Department of Physical Planning has recently undertaken a survey of commercial (office and retail) property in the Valley area. The Survey for Quarter 1 of 2002 was of commercial units and future ones will incorporate floorspace assessments for further detail. The survey revealed that of 220 identified commercial units 45% were in retail use. The next highest use was financial and professional services (35%). Food and drink premises (i.e. restaurants, bars etc) accounted for 10% of units.
The survey also assessed unit vacancy and found that overall 66 (30%) of all units are vacant. It revealed that 36% of financial and professional service units are vacant and that 31% of retail units are vacant.
The Department of Physical Planning recognises that whilst all centres including the Valley, require a stock of vacant retail / service use floorspace to provide opportunities for businesses to acquire and occupy new premises, high vacancy levels and long term vacancies are symptomatic of either (or a combination of):
Oversupply,
Supply of poor quality or poor value for money floorspace, or
Poor business performance or lack of confidence.
The Department of Physical Planning highlights that the initial survey has identified comparatively high levels of vacancy in both the retail and service area and that particular pockets of high vacancy exist. At the same time new floorspace is planned or under construction at a number of sites. The Department highlight that this and future surveys are of significant value in building up an information base for use by the Government of Anguilla and the private sector. The information will be of particular value in the review of the existing draft National Land Use Plan and the draft Valley Local Plan both dating from 1996.
The Department of Physical Planning will be undertaking similar surveys on a quarterly basis to monitor vacancy levels and changes in use.
If you have any questions about the above please contact the Department of Physical Planning
