Anguilla News: December 1995

News reports from on the island, as they were posted to the Net:

Windsurfing Shack Cove Bay/Sailboards

Windsurfing and Sailing at Cove Bay

Dandy has reopened his sailing center on Cove Bay for the season. He rents Mistral windsurfers, Aquafin sailboats, and a Hobie Cat 14, and gives lessons. Open 9:30am to 4pm every day, 809-497-5781. Vince Cate and I are going out every Thursday afternoon to see if we can learn to sail this fast catamarran.

Scilly Cay Rebuilding

Scilly Cay Restaurant in Island Harbour was swept 90% clear by the hurricane (one small beach hut made of pond fronds survived--makes you wonder about the efficacy of structural engineering). A shipload of greenheart lumber came from Guyana and was landed on the little islet. Workmen are busy rebuilding the restaurant and the beach huts. They report that this tropical wood is so hard that they burn out drill and saw motors every day.

Casablanca Becomes Sonesta

The Casablanca Resort has changed hands--it is now the Sonesta Beach Resort Anguilla and plans to reopen on January 18th. If you are interested in visiting, give the new General Manager Matthias Kammemer a call at 809-497-6999. He just arrived from Egypt where he ran Sonesta resorts on the Red Sea!

Cap Juluca Reopens

Cap Juluca has quietly reopened with 7 villas in operation. About 1/2 the beach has been reconstructed and the dredge continues operation in Maunday's Bay (progress is slow because the dredge operators must be careful to preserve the coral reefs under the layers of sand that Luis deposited in the bay). They expect to be fully operational on February 1st, with Pimm's restaurant and all the remaining villas.

New Villa Overlooking Sandy Hill Bay

Lucia at Chinchary has just completed construction on a new luxury one-bedroom villa. We went for a visit and found it very spacious (1500 sq ft for a couple) and well appointed, with king size bed, full kitchen, big living room and porch, and nice views toward St. Martin. $1100/wk (850 summer). She also has a smaller one-bedroom, closer to the water at $750 ($550 summer). The location is on Betty Hill, close to the beach, and the clay tennis court should be repaired in 2 weeks. Lucia has furnished this villa with Mary Chase, an interior designer from the US; they are also using it as an informal showroom of the rattan and tropical furniture that they can order for you and deliver in Anguilla. 809-497-4259.

Smitty Has New Place on the Beach

We went for a great Pina Colada (the secret seems to be cinammon sprinkled on top) last night at Smitty's new lobster house on the beach in Island Harbour. Smitty bought the derelict restaurant building that you see as you drive into town, remodeled the downstairs into a restaurant and bar, started a new shack on the sand, and plans to redo the upstairs next year as a nightclub. A wedding is planned at Smitty's Saturday, with the grand reopening on Sunday, December 24th. 809-497-4300.

Merry Christmas from Bob and Mary Ann Green

Best wishes for the holiday season and the new year from us in Anguilla. We have been here a year now and are settling in. We have purchased a piece of property and are proceeding to fulfill our dream: to build a home and a software development lab on the beach in Anguilla. Watch this page for more news in 1996.

Great Massage Still Available

Louis Price is no longer working at The Studio, but is still giving a great massage, either at his office or at your hotel, villa, or home. Highly recommended. Telephone: 809-497-3962.

T-Shirt Production Resumes

Phillipe at Carribean Silk Screen reports that they have finally finished repaired Luis damage and have power back from Anglec, so they are back in business making t-shirts again. 809-497-2272.

Fountain Beach Hotel has Reopened

The Fountain Beach Hotel on Shoal Bay (east) is open again. 809-497-3491.

Shoal Bay West Functioning Again

Anguilla has two beaches called Shoal Bay. The famous one with Uncle Ernie's is at the east end of the island, between Crocus Bay and Island Harbour. The less well-known one is Shoal Bay West at the west end facing St. Martin (it is the next beach after Cap Juluca).

On Shoal Bay West, the Paradise Cafe restaurant has reopened for business. 809-497-3559. They are also open for dinner. The Blue Waters beach apartments are also open; I have a report that they look good as new. 809-497-6292.

The elegant Cove Castles resort is open also. I talked to someone who owns one of the condos there and found out that the restaurant has a new chef from Los Angeles who is very good. The physical damage has been repaired and the beach is repairing itself naturally. 809-497-6801.

Arlo's Restaurant Is Rebuilding

Arlo's is an Italian restaurant on the cliff about Road Bay (turn at the Anguilla Trading Company at South Hill). The new French owner of Arlo's is repairing the structure and will reopen soon. 809-497-6810.
