Leaving civilization behind...

Loading our important supplies (tennis balls, fishing pole, sunblock, novels -- all the things we didn't use).

Scrub Island ahoy. Population: 0, before the arrival of our party of 9 and crew of 2 - water was choppy (imagine sea spray in hair).

The main beach - but we want to explore the island so we skip the opportunity to swim.

Tip: bring water, snacks, and more water.

The campsite - one of the rare places with shade on this island. Naturally we all leave it for a hike as soon as our supplies are set up, except our intelligent crew who do some fishing and take a nap.

Part of a lost shipment to Kiribati!

Kiribati is an island nation in the South Pacific, site of a famous WWII sea battle. This is odd, since we are on the Atlantic!

Visit a Kiribati web page with map links. Near Tuvalu you know.

After hours of walking in the hot sun, rationing our 3 small sports bottles of water, we reach a beautiful bay!

Kids find logs to float on. Mary Ann and Kathy snorkel. Johanne and Griffin wander off to next beach to explore (infinite energy!).

"Do you think this will look good in the living room?".

Our team continues searching for hidden treasure.

I wonder if there are any Pina Coladas in that bar?

It seems like a long walk back to the beach, through the old hotel, down the abandoned airstrip, past the crash, through a path with poisonous manchineal bushes on either side, just to get some cold drinks (our water is gone!).

Tip: next time, bring lunch in knapsack!
