And to help celebrate, two activites have been planned to commemerate the occasion. An Open House took place on Saturday, July 31, 1999, from noon until 5 pm, including a tour of the 14 room property and its facilities. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres and drinks were served.

The Lloyd's launched their special anniversary celebrations with a cocktail reception on Friday, July 30, 1999, where the inn's long time staff emembers, past and present, were honoured for their dedicated service. Three employees to be honoured were Merline Carty, Faustina Carty and Hosepha Rogers Vanterpool, who have devoted over 40 years collective service at the guest house and who can still be found today at the friendly inn, providing personalized service to guests. Some guests have come back time and time again to enjoy the special kindness of the Lloyds.

The family-run property first opened its doors in July of 1959 as a 10 room guest house, built by owner and manager David S. Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd, a successful general contractor, realized the need for Anguilla to have tourist accommodations during his years of involvement with the Federation of West Indies in the late 50s and early 60s. With no electricity and no telephone system on the island, Lloyd built the guest house to be a full service establishment that would provide three home-cooked meals a day to guests, as there were no restaurants on island. All for the price of US $8.00 per day!

As the only place in town that offered rooms and meals to visitors, Lloyd's hosted many dignitaries and VIPs during the early years. And even after other hotels and restaurants opened on island in later years, Lloyd's was the caterer of choice to provide sandwiches for the reception held in honour of Prince Charles' visit in 1973.

In response to heavy demand, the small inn grew to 12 rooms in 1960 and 14 rooms by the mid 70s. But despite the bigger facilities, Lloyd's has remained true to its roots over the past 40 years. Mr. Lloyd's wife, Vida, took over as the manager of the property when David passed away in 1989, and along with their children David and Christine, Mrs. Lloyd has kept the same family atmosphere at the inn, which continues to charm guests.

Today, meals at Lloyd's are only offered as part of an optional meal plan, rates have increased to US$60 per day, and there are plans for further expansion and renovation. But despite these changes, Lloyd's stays refreshingly the same as it was when it opened in 1959.
