There are less than six months to train for the Optimist's first annual "Anguilla's Race Against AIDS", to be held on the eve of World AIDS Day, November 30, 2003. This charity event will include three races and offer the opportunity for all levels of runners/walkers to participate.

The Half Marathon Race will award a cash prize of $1000 US each for the first man and woman to finish the course, as well as valuable prizes and medals for those placing.

The 10K Race and 5K Walk/Run will offer valuable prizes and medals to the top finishers in different age groups, giving both younger and older runners the opportunity to excel. We are encouraging different businesses, service organizations and churches to participate in the 5K Walk/Run and will offer an award for the largest participation from one group.

Each participant will receive a certificate, "goody bag" and T-shirt. Hoping to attract some well-known regional and international runners, we will be providing discounted accommodations, meals and car rentals, to help lower the travel costs.

The races are endorsed by the Anguillan Government and Anguillan Amateur Athletic Federation. The race routes will be measured in accordance with the International Amateur Athletic Federation Guidelines. A map of the routes will be put on the Optimist website (optimistaxa.org.ai) for viewing later.

Description of events and prizes will be made public as soon as details are finalized. Entry forms for the event are available on the website and offer discounted fees for early registration. You may also contact Jerome Roberts, chairman of the race committee, at (264) 497-4673,235-4673, or [email protected] for more information.

This charity event will offer the opportunity for all levels of runners/walkers of different ages to participate. By getting all sectors of the community involved, the Optimists hope to heighten AIDS awareness and help reduce the stigma that keeps this epidemic underground.

HELP MAKE THIS FIRST ANNUAL "ANGUILLA'S RACE AGAINST AIDS" A SUCCESS!!
