Pottery course from expert to be held in Anguilla in February.

Jimmy Clark, director of the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, will be in Anguilla in February to conduct courses in pottery. He is a specialist in pinch pottery and in sawdust firing that he will be using here.

Pinching is an ancient hand building technique that allows the maker to interact directly with the clay without the use of a wheel or other instruments. Clark describes his work as “an attempt to connect with the spirit and of the archaic.” He has found that the raku sawdust kiln is most effective for his work and part of the course will be the setting up of this type of kiln that anyone can produce for themselves.

Clark is an expert who is well known for his workshops in the USA, Puerto Rico, Germany and Canada, he has exhibited widely in the USA, Switzerland and Germany and won many awards for his outstanding work.

The courses in Anguilla will run from February 25-March 1. and will be held in the mornings from 9.00 a.m. until 12 noon and in the evenings from 5.00 p.m.-7.00 p.m. The cost of US$175.00 for the morning course and $150.00 for the evening sessions includes all clay and other materials and the cost of firing work. A spokesperson for the Anguilla Arts Festival Committee that is organizing the workshops says that it is hoped parents and children may attend the evening workshops together.

Clark says that in the course he will attempt to transmit not only technical methods of creating a wide variety of forms with the pinch technique, but also to explore the therapeutic almost spiritual qualities of pinching. He will be demonstrating and students will be making small pots, larger vessels, closed boxes, pitchers, vases and mugs. He will also demonstrate finishing techniques, the application of colour and pit firing in sawdust.

The Arts Committee is hoping that a number of persons will benefit from the course including persons from St Martin/St Maarten or other neighbouring islands. Further information can be obtained from the Devonish Art Gallery, Tel 264 497 2949. [Story courtesy Brenda Carty.]

Community Foundation to launch “Anguilla Cares” Campaign.

The Anguilla Community Foundation is to launch a fund-raising campaign called “Anguilla Cares” that will run from the end of January until Anguilla Day, May 30. The aim is to raise US$40,000 that will be used for grants to organizations and communities for worthwhile projects. To reach its goal the Foundation will be appealing to individual, corporate and government sources.

There are three honorary chairpersons, Victor Banks, Emile Gumbs and Walter MacCalman. They will provide overall leadership for the Campaign and recognition and community support for the fund raising effort. In addition they will be announcing the launching, reporting back to the community each month and assist the board members in contacting potential donors both business and individual.

The start of the campaign is scheduled for January 31 at an event at Johnno’s Beach Bar at Sandy Ground. A wide cross section of the community is being invited to participate in this important launch and to hear about the work of the Foundation in Anguilla. A thermometer is to be erected near to the Post Office so that the general public can watch the progress of the campaign and the funds being raised.

The Anguilla Community Foundation recognizes the many needs in the island and is ready to step into the role of grant maker with a defined process for distributing and tracking funds for charitable purposes. They have designed a standard process for grant making including a grant application, a system of reviewing grants and a grant report requirement. The Board of the Anguilla Community Foundation is hoping that donors will join them in order to share an organized and managed grant programme for the island. [Story courtesy Brenda Carty.]

Fresh Fish? Spence Miller (spencem@miller-johnson.com) writes:

My wife and I are heading to the island Saturday and wondered if there are any places you can buy fresh fish from any of the locals. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for your insight and help!

The answer: The main fish market (The Fishery) is located on George Hill/ Waterswamp area on the main road before you reach the roundabout heading down to Sandy Ground if you're travelling westwards. They sell fresh fish that is already cleaned anytime between 5:30pm and 7:00pm everyday except Sunday. Some days they have fish in the day but they often sell out all their fish by 7:00pm. The fishermen bring their fish at varied times between 5:30pm and 7:00pm so to avoid waiting a long time or going too late, I always call them at around 5:30pm to get a rough idea when the fish will be brought in. You can call 497-3170 and speak to Esme or Eric to find out. Also there are several spots that sell fish in Island Harbour but the times are days of sale are not set. If you happen to be in that village sometime you can ask a villager the best time and place to get fish. You may wish to ask if the fish is already cleaned and gutted as this chore can be arduous at times (smile).

We have vacationed Anguilla fourteen (14) times and intend to visit again in April. I left my heart there after the first visit and vow to spend part of our retirement in a few years. The people of Anguilla are the best around any vacation island and believe me we have been around the Caribbean. We have made close friends, which is very easy to do.
